Justice of the Peace

Key Roles 

1.Appointment of Justices of the Peace and publication of the appointments in the Government Gazette.

2.Issuing and renewal of Identity Cards of Justices of the Peace.

3.Issuing of Registration Numbers for Justices of the Peace in respect whom registration numbers have not been given.

4.Issuing of certified copies of the letters of appointment to Justices of the Peace whose original letters of appointment has gone missing.

5.Authentication of the registration of the appointment of Justices of the Peace who certify the affidavits, documents etc.

6.Inquiry of complaints received against the misconduct committed by Justices of the Peace.


Qualifications

Should have taken and subscribed the oath or made and subscribed the affirmation before the relevant Court upon being duly appointed to be a  Justice of the Peace.

 

Procedure of the submission of applications

Duly completed application accompanied by prescribed annexes should be sent by registered post to reach the Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Colombo 12 or be handed over to the JP Unit of the Ministry of Justice during the normal office hours.            

 

Applications for JP Identity Cards

Applications could be obtained at the Reception or the JP Unit of the Ministry of Justice.

 

Charges for the applications for JP Identity Cards

This service is free of charge.

 Acceptance of applications

Duly completed application should be sent by registered post to reach the Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Colombo 12 or be handed over to the JP Unit of the Ministry of Justice during normal office hours.

Fees payable for the processing and issuing of JP Identity Cards

A sum of Rs.200/- should be paid to credit of the account number 176-1-001-9-9025184 at the Mid-City Branch of the People’s Bank, Colombo 10 in favor of the “Secretary to the Ministry of Justice”  and the credit slip issued by the Bank in proof of the payment should be attached to the application. This payment is also made at the Account Division of the Ministry of Justice.

 

Time taken for processing and issuing of the JP Identity Card

Documents required to be submitted

(a)    A photocopy of the letter of appointment issued under the hand of the Secretary to the Ministry of Justice. (Please refrain from forwarding the covering letter signed by the Hon. Minister of Justice.)

(b)   A copy of the oath/affirmation given by the court before it the oath was taken and subscribed/affirmation was made and subscribed.

(c)    A copy of the National Identity Card.

(d)   Two colour photographs of 40 mm X 40 mm size taken within six months immediately preceding the application for the JP Identity Card.(The overleaf of the photographs should be written the applicant’s name and the JP Registration Number as is provided for in paragraph 08 the letter of appointment.)

(e)    Receipt in proof of the payment (Credit slip if it is to the bank or the receipt if it is to the Shroff of the Ministry of Justice)

(f)    A Certificate of Residence issued by Grama Seva Niladhari if there exists any change in the residential address.

(g)   A Rs.35/- stamped envelope indicating the name and the address of the applicant for delivering the JP Identity Card by mail.

 Registration numbers for Justices of the Peace in respect whom registration numbers have not been given.

  • A written request accompanied by at least a photocopy of the letter of appointment of Justice of the Peace or a photocopy of Oaths/ Affirmation or a photocopy of the JP Identity Card or the Gazette Notification in which the appointment was published is required to be sent to reach the Secretary to the Ministry of Justice by Justice of the Peace in respect of whom a registration number was not given at the time of the appointment was made.
  • A fee is not chargeable for this service.
  • Your request may be sent by registered post to reach the Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Colombo 12 or be handed over to the JP Unit of the Ministry of Justice during normal office hours.

Issuing of certified copies of the letters of appointment to Justices of the Peace whose original letters of appointment has gone missing.

  • Any Justice of the Peace whose original letter of appointment has gone missing or has been not in whose possession may obtain a certified copy.
  • For this purpose, request in writing accompanied by at least a photocopy of the letter of appointment of Justice of the Peace or a photocopy of Oaths/Affirmation or a photocopy of the JP Identity Card or a photocopy of the Gazette Notification in which the appointment was published is required to be sent to reach the Secretary to the Ministry of Justice.
  • This service is free of charge.
  • Your request may be sent by registered post to reach the Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Colombo 12 or be handed over to the JP Unit of the Ministry of Justice during normal office hours.
