Civil or Commercial Matters
The
Mutual Assistance in Civil and Commercial Matters Act, No. 39 of 2000
has been enacted to give effect to Sri Lanka’s accession to the above
Conventions. The Act seeks to provide a scheme of assistance, which
conforms to the provisions of the Conventions. Details of the

Convention of 25 October 1980 on the Civil Aspects of International
Child Abduction
The Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction
Act, No. 10 of 2001 has been enacted to give effect to Sri Lanka’s
accession to the above Convention.

International Mutual Assistance in
Criminal Matters
The Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters Act, No. 25 of 2002 has
been enacted to provide for the rendering of assistance in criminal
matters by Sri Lanka and specified countries. Assistance includes the
location and identification of witnesses or suspects, the service of
documents, the examination of witnesses, the obtaining of evidence,
documents or other articles, the execution of requests for search and
seizure, the effecting of a temporary transfer of a person in custody to
appear as a witness, the facilitation of the personal appearance of
witnesses, the provision of documents and other records, the location of
the proceeds of any criminal activity and the enforcement of orders for
the payment of fines or for the forfeiture or freezing of property
(section 3 of the Act).
