The three member committee appointed by Hon. Minister of Justice Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe to investigate in to the Welikada Prison riot in November 2012, handed over its report to Hon. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The committee headed by retired High Court Judge Vimal Nambuwasam handed over the report which contains their findings to the Hon. Prime Minister at the latter’s office in the Parliamentary Complex, in the presence of Mr. Rajapakshe, the Hon. Minister of Justice. The other members of the committee are retired DIG Mr. Asoka Wijethileke and retired Administrative Officer Mr. S.K.Liyanage. Minister Rajapakshe appointed the committee to probe the incident on January 23rd this year.
The deadly riot that broke out on November 9, 2012 at the country’s largest and most crowded prison in Welikada resulted in the deaths of 27 inmates and injuries to 43 others, among the injured were 13 Special Task Force (STF) officers including the commanding officer of the STF team and a prison official. Previous report put out by the former government on the riots was criticized by some sections. Several Civil Society organizations had alleged that some of the inmates had been executed. During yesterday’s handing over of the report to the Premier, the Justice Minister said that the Ministry will act upon the findings and recommendations of the committee.
Justice Ministry Secretary Kamalini de Silva too had been present on the occation.

Foundation stone for the new official quarters of Attorney General’s Department to be constructed at Irattaperiyakulam, Vavuniya was laid by Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapaksha, Minister of Justice.
Mr. Yuwanjana Wijethilaka, Hon. Attorney General, Mr. A.Premashankar, High Court Judge, Mr. V.Ramakamalan, District Judge and Mr. A.C.Riswan, Magistrate, Vavuniya, Major General Boniface Perera, Commander-Wanni, Mr. U.K. Dissanayaka, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Vavuniya, Mr. Bandula Harischandra, District Secretary, Vavuniya and Senior Officials of the Attorney General’s Department, Army Officers and Attorneys-at-Law were present on this occasion.
